With rare exceptions, no paints, coloring or stains of any kind are used in creating these boxes.
About The Artist
Dr. Douglas Dahlman dabbled in wood working most of his life but only since his retirement (2001) as an entomologist with the University of Kentucky has he found time to think about creative small and functional wood pieces. Self-taught, Doug has done everything from building houses, churches, furniture and small wood projects.
Since 2010 he has focused his spare time on making small wooden boxes that have intarsia lids. Intarsia is the art of forming wood mosaics. The boxes are uniquely shaped to form the silhouette of the image being depicted. Doug's designs include 13 species of birds as well as other animals, insects, flowers, scenic views, Celtic designs
Since 2010 he has focused his spare time on making small wooden boxes that have intarsia lids. Intarsia is the art of forming wood mosaics. The boxes are uniquely shaped to form the silhouette of the image being depicted. Doug's designs include 13 species of birds as well as other animals, insects, flowers, scenic views, Celtic designs, iconic symbols, etc. Nearly any design can be made. All native and exotic woods used are natural colors enhanced with UV resistant acrylic finish. Occasionally acrylic paints are used (there are no blue woods). A description and/or diagram indicating the names of the woods used in the specific design is included with each box.
The boxes may be used for keepsakes, jewelry, coins, simply displayed to feature the intarsia designs or for any other chosen purpose.
